The Chattanooga Mocs are coming off of a week one road loss at the hands of North Alabama 41-27 and they’ll be looking to right the ship this weekend as the squad returns home to Finley Stadium for the first time during the 2023 season.
This week, Chattanooga takes on the Kennesaw State Owls who came away with a week one home victory over Tusculum 38-7. Kick-off for this game will occur at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 9th, 2023.
The Mocs faithful will see a new face under center with UCLA junior transfer, Chase Artopoeus for the first time at Finley Stadium. Artopoeus actually ranks second nationally in total offense with 351 yards per game after one week. The hope is that he can deliver another big performance this weekend as he looks to ingratiate himself to the Chattanooga faithful.
Offense wasn’t the problem for UTC in week one, it was the defense that struggled by giving up 511 total yards enroute to the loss.
That defensive unit will have to be much sharper on Saturday as the Owls sport a senior quarterback named Jonathan Murphy who’s looking to finally make an impact during his colligate career. He was good last weekend throwing for 219 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions while leading the team in rushing as a dual-threat option with 90 yards and a score.
Four different running backs got carries last week so it’s difficult to tell who will be their go-to guy. As far as pass-catchers go, the Mocs will have to be aware of the big play ability of Blake Bohannon and Tykeem Wallace who each caught a 50+ yard TD pass last week.
Finally, on defense UTC will have to be aware of where senior linebacker, Jalen Barnum is, he’s a tackling machine. Additionally, this Owls group has some solid defensive backs that will look to make some plays in, Deontre Morris, Markeith Montgomery, and Dylan Hand.
Hopefully the Chattanooga Mocs are up to the task this weekend and can deliver the home crowd a victory and even their record at 1-1 before they open up Southern Conference play at home against the Citadel.
