Former South Pittsburg head football coach Chris Jones, who resigned after just one-game last season, has been named head coach and general manager of the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Elks.
Jones, who played at local North Jackson High School in Stevenson, Alabama before walking on at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, began his coaching career at North Jackson in 1993 and has since held numerous coaching roles in both college and professional football.
Jones first stint in the CFL came in 2002 while serving as the defensive line coach for the Montreal Alouettes. His first CFL head coaching job came in 2014 with the Edmonton Eskimos, where Jones’ teams went 26-10 including a victory in the 2015 Grey Cup. Following a successful two-year stint with Edmonton, Jones accepted the head coach and general manager positions for the division-rival Saskatchewan Roughriders. Jones’ Saskatchewan teams went 27-27 over three-seasons. One week after signing a contract extension with Saskatchewan, Jones left to become a senior defensive specialist with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.
Jones did not coach in 2020 and accepted an offer to become the head coach at South Pittsburg in 2021. The Pirates were 2-0 under Jones’ short tenure.
Following Jones’ departure, the South Pittsburg Pirates went 10-2 including a 24-21 over then-undefeated McKenzie to claim the Tennessee Class 1A State Championship.
