The Florida Gators didn’t let their tough loss against Alabama last week hold them back to much as the Volunteers provided easy prey for the Gators to get back in the win column.
To be fair to Tennessee, the opening quarters showed heavy promise. Hendon Hooker led the Vols to two early touchdowns. The first was a 47 yard screen to TiYon Evans and the second was an impressive 75-yard Hooker-Payton connection that had the Vols up 14-10 just before the half. However, the Gators will able to secure a touchdown moments before the end of the half and didn’t look back.
Florida managed to shut Tennessee out for the remainder of the game, in fact they put on a record breaking offensive showcase. Gators’ QB, Emory Jones, became the first Florida QB to have over 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards since Tim Tebow.
Florida goes up to 3-1 on the season while Tennessee drops to 2-2. The Gators will go against Kentucky next week and the Vols will meet Missouri.
Jake’s Take
Despite the poor second half showing, Heupel’s Vols showed a lot of positives in this matchup. Tennessee was able to accumulate 423 total yards of offense with zero turnovers. Additionally the Vols defense showed a good bit of improvement as they managed to force their first fumble of the year and were able to contain to Gators early on.
For their first SEC matchup–against a great team–the Vols seem to be moving in the right direction. They go against Missouri next week which will show if the Vols can maintain consistency across their SEC opponents.
The road is going to be tough for the Vols in the near future as they have consecutive matchups against Ole Miss, Alabama, Kentucky and Georgia.
