Isaiah Powe is one of eight Chattanooga Mocs heading to day 2 of the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear.
CHATTANOOGA—Day 1 of the Southern Scuffle presented by Compound Sportswear was good to the Chattanooga Mocs. Eight Mocs move on to day two with a program record three in the semifinals. The squad sits in eighth with 42.5 points.
A greedy Coach Kyle Ruschell would not concede it was a great day, but he was pleased overall with the squad’s performance.
“Um, good and bad,” was his response. “There are guys that we could have sneaked into the semis, we could’ve had more guys move into the second day. But you saw some guys, especially our younger guys, doing the right things find ways to win.”
Stanford is the leader midway with 90 points ahead of Indiana (81.5) and Oklahoma (77.5). Army is fourth at 64.5 ahead of Northern Colorado (58.0). The Cardinal and Sooners lead the field with seven in the semifinals and 14 total moving on to day two.
Tuesday’s action starts at 11 a.m. The eight finals matches at each of the 10 weight classes begin at 7 p.m.
Championship Hopefuls
It was an impressive day for true freshman Isaiah Powe (141) and sophomore Blake Boarman (133) along with No. 10 Noah Castillo (149).
Boarman had the signature victory. He toppled No. 14 Tyler Knox of Stanford. He trailed 4-0 before turning it on with 11 unanswered points dominating the final four minutes.
Powe was in charge in all three of his wins with two majors and a tech fall. Castillo had a flair for the dramatic using a sudden victory overtime to topple Thomas Deck of Army with an early takedown in the extra period.
“That’s ranked top 15 in the country for Blake,” Ruschell added. “It was almost like he needed to see himself score and when he did, then he started pouring it on. He did a great job and had that confidence and now he knows he can beat anybody.
“Isaiah had a great performance today. Two majors and a tech. He’s got a good opportunity ahead of him. Noah had a lot of these really close matches, and I just told him, this is what you expect at this level.”
Consolations Hopefuls
There was disappointment in the quarters. Brayden Palmer (125) had to injury forfeit in the third period of his bout, while Kamdyn Munro got off to a good start before succumbing to No. 16 Noah Mulvaney of Bucknell.
Three others used the wrestlebacks to continue their quests for the Tuesday podium. Both 157s, Austin Paradice and Jackson Hurst had exciting finishes en route to the second consolation round of eight. The final Moc mover was an eye opener.
Ethan Vergara (285) shook off an early pin to march into Tuesday. It culminated with a 3-2 decision in tiebreaker two over #31 Nick Willham of Indiana. After the two went four periods tied 1-1, Vergara rolled him for a 2-point reversal in the first tiebreak period and then played shutdown defense in the second for the win.
Tuesday starts with semifinal action at 11 a.m. The finals begin at 7 p.m., with each podium place decided through the 10 weight classes.
