The Cleveland high school football program will be looking for a new head coach next season with the announcement earlier Thursday that Marty Wheeler is stepping down as head coach. In addition, he’s also retiring from coaching football all together.
According to the Times Free Press, Wheeler called a team meeting early on Thursday to inform his players of his decision.
As head coach of the Cleveland Blue Raiders football program he finishes his tenure with an even .500 record at 21-21 and made two appearances in the Class 6A State Playoffs. Altogether as a head coach his overall record stands at 106 wins compared to just 59 losses.
Before he joined Cleveland high he lead a Covington high program to 78 wins over a 10 year span as the head coach there which included three Class 3A State Championship Game appearances.
Wheeler’s team may not have qualified for the playoffs this season but he accomplished something this year which no one had since the year 2000 when his team knocked off Maryville 28-24 which incredibly gave them their first region loss in 144 games.
Congratulations on a great coaching career Marty Wheeler, thank you for guiding all the kids you got to work with over your career, and we wish you nothing but the best in what comes next for you in life.
