SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Chattanooga junior Abbey Cornelius has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week presented by GEICO for games played Dec. 28 through Jan. 3 the league office announced today. The award, selected by the league office, is the second for Cornelius this season.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds at Jacksonville State on Dec. 30 for her fourth double-double of the season. She played 38 minutes and went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, adding an assist and a block in the Mocs’ nonconference finale.
Cornelius is ranked sixth in the NCAA for defensive rebounds and leads the Southern Conference and 14th for overall rebounds in the national standings. She ranks third on Chattanooga’s all-time blocked shots list with 115 over her career and is the fourth UTC player to top the century mark in that category.
Chattanooga (2-13) plays at Samford on Thursday, Jan. 6, in the conference opener for both squads before the Mocs play at SoCon preseason-favorite Mercer on Saturday, Jan. 8.
