Chris Jones, the head coach of the South Pittsburg Pirates, has stepped down only four weeks into the season.
Jones is taking a job as the defensive coordinator for the Canadian Football league’s Toronto Argonauts. His duties with the Argonauts begin immediately.
Jones recently called the South Pittsburg position his “dream job” and led the Pirates to a 35-7 win over Sequatchie County. Due to COVID-19 issues, that is the only game South Pittsburg has played this year. The Pirates are scheduled to play against Whitwell this Friday evening.
Chris Jones is South Pittsburg High School alumni and has had an illustrious coaching career at the professional and collegiate level, including a tenure with the Cleveland Browns as a defensive assistant and 17 year career in the Canadian Football League.
South Pittsburg athletic department says that assistant coach Wesley Stone and athletic director Heath Grider will work together to lead the program for the remainder of the season.
The Pirates are currently ranked 3rd in 1a.
